A found treasure! Attic-fresh 19th century hand-stitched band box. Stamped Gimbels Bros New York Millinery Department on interiors of both box and lid. Fiberboard box covered in the finest blockprint wallpaper, darkened by age on top and at sides, with a light band around the exterior top where the side of the lid protected the paper beneath. The paper is truly spectacular, with fringed draperies swagged back with stylized floral motifs and swiggles and wags and lines. Wow. This box is in as found condition, with the bottom about 3/4 unsewn to the sides. Certainly worthy of restoration, and easy to restore. There is the discoloration of the paper that I already mentionned, a few small pale stains, probably water, on the lid surface, some rubbing to rim edges, and mild and appropriate age wear common to paper band boxes of this age. This box is a little gem; a rare find with its Gimbels Bros. stamps and its gorgeous blockprint paper. A good size, too. 17"L X 10"H X 13"D.
