Description
REDUCED PRICE LEON LEVINSTEIN NYC Couple on Street Lower East Side c1970 Vintage Silver Gelatin Print Vintage Leon Levinstein image of a couple walking on an NYC street that maybe Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. The image is printed on double weight fiber based paper and is stamped with the Leon Levinstein stamp on the verso. The print is in very good condition but under raking light you can see several handling creases, non of which break the emulsion and reveal the paper base. There are a few other handling marks and indentations on the print. This is all normal for a Leon Levinstein vintage photograph who was not known for his craftmanship. The print is printed on Agfa paper and has rich blacks and a good tonal range. It is archivally mounted on 20x16 100% acid free rag board with a museum over mat. Several years ago there was a major Leon Levinstein show at the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York City. Village Voice photography critic Vince Aletti wrote an extremely favorable review on the show in particular sited Levinstein as a overlooked master of street photography. Leon Levinstein was born in a small town in West Virginia to Russian-Jewish parents. His father lost his clothing business during the Depression and the family moved to Baltimore, where Levinstein attended the Maryland Institute of Art. He remained in Baltimore until he was inducted into the army during World War II and served in the Air Force. He returned to Baltimore briefly after the war before moving to New York City, where he worked as an art director at a small advertising agency. Levinstein's work gained recognition in the 1950s, when his photographs were included in several important exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, including The Family of Man. In the following years he worked in colour as well as black-and-white and travelled to Mexico, India, and Europe. His primary subject remained New York, where he lived until his death in 1988. This work presents the opportunity to own a piece of photography that will undoubtly become more valuable over time. This piece is being deaccessioned from a private collection of museum quality photography.
