Description
Judy Ann MacMillan was born in Kingston, Jamaica, where her early art development was mentored by Albert Huie and Carl Abrahams. Her first exhibition, at the age of twenty-one, was opened by Edna Manley. MacMillan's portraits are captivating; her landscape paintings are fiercely observed; and her still life has a sense of the fullness of simple pleasures.   MacMillan's landscape paintings fall into a number of different categories. Most visitors to Jamaica think of Jamaica in terms of its wonderful beaches, suffused in dazzling light, and there are many such images in her work. However, MacMillan is also keenly interested in other aspects of Jamaica's intricate topography - in buildings from the colonial period, in the way the appearance of the island has been shaped by intensive agriculture, and in the inland Jamaica which was of interest to the makers of nineteenth-century topographical prints. Like her mentor Albert Huie, she also has a passion for Jamaica's beautiful trees, which play an important role in giving Jamaican scenery its special texture. Her work is so true to the island, that her book, My Jamaica, The Paintings of Judy Ann MacMillan, written by Edward Lucie-Smith, is the publishers most successful Carribean Art book. Additional information about the artist, as well as a broad selection of her work, can be viewed at: www.judyannmacmillan.com. MacMillan's recent work in Calistoga, in Napa Valley, California, and in Hudson, in Columbia County, New York, has appeared in exhibitions and receptions in both locations. COASTLINE, ST.
