Description
What you have here is a “mixed media” painting by montrealese artist Camiré (1963-). The painting is 50 inches wide and 38 inches high, and as all (most?) of Camiré’s work is covered with a thin layer of varnish that gives the painting a very appealing and shimmering gloss, which makes the painting looks different at different times of day or night (depending on the lightning provided), with no alteration in quality. The painting is signed by the artist.   With its use of modern techniques and textures as well as with its apparently simplistic themes, Camiré’s works are resolutely grounded in what we call “contemporary art”, but this painting in particular evokes much older, more “classical” ones (though not of the classical era). The background, depicting a forest in the fog, provides an enigmatic and mysterious mood, almost unearthly in nature, which reminds me greatly of “The Monk by the Sea” by Caspar David Friedrich – my favourite painter (and I’d even add : my favourite painting). The contrasting effect between this foggy and enigmatic background and the warm, bright red color of the flowers, as well as the blurry aspects of the trees opposed the more focused one of the main subject (not to mention the very nature of the subject) are also reminiscent of the Romantic and post-Romantic era (Camiré’s style is indeed almost impressionistic in nature). For a similar effect of contrast (though with a different subject), compare it to Renoir’s “Jeune fille au ruban bleu”. Notice also how the background, moving from the upper left corner to the right, lightens up around the subject, bringing it an added sense of mystery. Again, this is a somewhat common device, but nonetheless very characteristic of Camiré’s style.  The painting also bears, on the upper left corner, Camiré’s trademark golden stripes – here very well integrated into the composition, giving the beholder the very clear impression of seeing this fairytale-like scenery through a window. To add to the richness of this work, the foreground, again in a very contrasting fashion, is painted in highly flamboyant, almost fire-like colors that to me evoke some of Turner’s paintings.   I genuinely feel that this is a true contemporary masterpiece, of which I’m terribly fond of already – hence the (relatively) high starting price. Thus the choice is very simple : if you like it as much as I do and have the means, then bid on it. If not, I guess I’ll be carrying it with me wherever I go !   (Shipping and handling fees are included in the starting price. Will ship worldwide.)
