Original charcoal on heavy rag carton paper laid on stretched linen canvas, by George Scheffield ( 1839 - 1892 ): canvas/image size: 15 inches by 22 inches: signed and dated lower right " G. Sheffield 1886 ": titled verso on the upper stretcher bar - " Off Dover ". ( framed ). George Sheffield was born in the village of Wigton ( West Cambria Lake District ), England in 1839. At first an industrial designer in Manchester, he soon turned to full time painting and established his first studio at Betwa-y-Coed in Wales. He exhibited in Manchester at the Academy of Art in 1868 and at the Royal Academy in London ( six works ) and at the Suffolk St. Galleries in 1872. In 1871 he was elected full Academician to the Manchester Academy. In his short life, this great talent was especially recognized for his powerful and highly spontaneous charcoal works depicting fishing boats and storms at sea.
