Description
This is a W. Hollar (1607-1677) etching called (as the title indicates) Willebroeck bey Boom. In the catalogue raisonne of Hollar's prints, by Pennington, it is number 901. It is after a painting by Jan Brueghel (not the elder Peter), which means that Hollar copied the painting, so the notation Brueguel inu (means really inv, and translated from various Latin forms is, roughly, invented) indicates that Brueghel painted it/created the original composition; fecit means made (so Hollar made this particular print, he was the etcher, and it's "after" of based on thecomposition or painting by Brueghel); Meyssens excudit means that Meyssens was the publisher of the print. There were two states for the print; in the second state the date was erased and another publisher's name put in, so it appears this is the first state (and it's better to have a first state thana second for the plate would be in better shape and hence the impression better.(Historical details courtesy of Harris Schranck Fine Arts of NY)
