Description
17th CENTURY - OLD MASTER SPANISH STILL LIFE OIL " Still Life With Spanish Silver Chocolate Pot, Porcelain Chocolate Cup With High Lipped Chocolate Saucer & Bollo de Pan ". ( 17th Century ). Manner of Juan de Zubaran: canvas size: 23cm x 32cm ( 9 x 12.5 inches ): framed: frame size: 43 x 51.5cm ( 17 x 20 1/4 inches ). An important small early Spanish oil of an extremely rare subject. First introduced by the early Spanish explorers, Chocolate drinks were greatly prized in Spanish royal circles in the 17th century. The unique silver pots themselves were also prized. Paintings of them were sometimes commissioned by the Royal Court and the Spanish aristocracy for their collections. These early pots were usually silver lidded, with a straight handle at one side with short spouts located high on one side to keep the left over cocoa butter that settled at the bottom from clogging it. The oil shows some old inpainting under UV. Scattered spots mostly 2mm x 2mm or less on the bread: a spot on the lower right lid of the pot running about 2.5cm horizontally by 5mm high: another about the same size running horizontally just below the lid edge on the left side: another below the plate just above the table top edge running horizontally about 5cm inches by 1cm high: and another about 1cm inch high at the widest point by 2.5cm long in the background at the convergence of the upper right top edge of the cup and the left top edge of the bread. ( Overall, the cup, dish and pot are mostly original, albeit covered with old yellow varnish and grit ). The canvas itself is loosely laid over an 18th century thick paperboard backing ( see close up showing the backing and the typical 17th century Spanish canvas weave from the back ): the work is not cut down, showing remnants of tack holes all around the unpainted canvas margin edges where it was once stretched. The heavy wide gold leaf and painted Spanish Style frame is circa 1940 and measures about 17 x 20 inches: frame is in excellent conditrion.
