This is, we believe, a large, ink,  full figure silhouette that measures      14in high by 20 1/2in wide.  The backing has disintegrated but it has never been out of this frame. Saved from the backing is the original hand written script stating the names and ages. It reads:  Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne 34 yrsMadeliene Rosiaine Bureau 32 yrs1832Charlotte 8 yrsNanicie 6 yrsJohn 4 yrs This was purchased by my Mother over 45 years ago in Washington, PA, where Le Moyne lived, and we will guarantee it's authenticity   Please take a momment to read about this very interesting man and his family!  We have included in the photos a post card from the early 1900's of the First US Crematorium that Dr. Le Moyne opened and where he himself was cremated! "The LeMoyne family originally came to America to escape the excessive violence and chaos of the French Revolution. Francis Julius LeMoyne followed his father into the profession of medicine. Dr. Francis LeMoyne was an active abolitionist who founded the Washington County Antislavery Society in 1835. Because of his leadership efforts, he was nominated by other abolitionists (under the banner of the Liberty Party) for vice president of the United States in 1840 and for governor of Pennsylvania on three different occasions. He declined each nomination, but his name appeared on the ballots anyway. The LeMoyne House stands as one of the best preserved Underground Railroad sites in the United States. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and has been officially designated by the National Park Service as a National Historic Landmark of the Underground Railroad. "Dr. Francis Julius LeMoyne was a man who got things done. He was a practicing physician, a devoted husband, a loving father of eight, the founder of Washington's Citizens Library, a co-founder of the Washington Female Seminary, an ardent supporter of abolition, and, it seems, a bit of a medical detective!" "The stately stone house, located at 49 East Maiden Street in downtown Washington, Pennsylvania, was built in 1812 by John Julius LeMoyne, the father of Francis Julius LeMoyne. Both father and son were practicing physicians, but it was the courageous Francis Julius LeMoyne who, despite the strict Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, risked his personal freedom and fortune to do what he knew was morally right — take a stand against the institution of slavery. This successful 19th Century doctor, reformer and builder of the first crematory in the western hemisphere, opened his home and properties as stops along the Underground Railroad, the series of safe hiding places for runaway slaves as they trudged north on their precarious journey to Canada and freedom." Quoted from the Washington County, PA Historical Society Web Site: http://www.wchspa.org/html/house.htm and http://www.wchspa.org/html/crematory.htm "Local tradition maintains that the LeMoynes worked together as a family to hide runaways in their Washington County home. Recollections from their eight children suggest that as many as 25 fugitives stayed in the residence at one time. After the Civil War, Dr. LeMoyne remained active in social causes, including support for equal rights for women and the advancement of newly freed slaves. In 1870, his donation of $20,000 established a school for freedmen, the LeMoyne Normal and Commercial School in Memphis, Tennessee. Francis Julius LeMoyne died in 1879 at the age of 81."Quoted from Explore PA History: http://www.explorepahistory.com/hmarker.php?markerId=287  Please take a minute to see the following links and feel free to Google this very interesting man and his family!
