Description
Up for bid is a spectacular mid nineteenth century 1853 painting by Hudson River School / American artist Charles Themmen.  While very little is known about the Connecticut and Massachusetts painter, his landscapes attest to a talented artist, well versed in the medium of oil painting.  Working from a Springfield address, Themmen was active during the middle of the nineteenth century.  He exhibited his work with the Brooklyn Art Association between 1861 and 1868, and seems to have focused on naturalistic portrayals of his local landscape.  He is, however, possibly the same C. Themmen who contributed three paintings to the American Art-Union sale of 1852, including two scenes of France.  This Winter Scene painted by Themmen in 1853 may have been created in Europe and later brought to the United States.  I believe the location to either be London, Paris or quite possibly Boston.  The Painting is signed and dated bottom right 1853 C. Thenmmen.  The painting is exceptional and of museum quality. Themmen's detail is precise.  Snow and ice dangling on the distant spires as a weather vain soars to the heavens.  Winter flora continues to grow and flourish on the stone walls, suggesting the liveliness of this location. The ice mirrors the scene above, while cracks ice blocks, rocks and sticks are scattered throughout.   The skater in foreground boastfully heads towards the workers with possibly a basket of hot chestnuts.  The dog so beautifully painted and lifelike, leaps off  the canvas and then back to the scent of the approaching food.  Skaters in the back prepare for some fun and workers nervously cart lumber to town. In the distance is the city with people walking above holding umbrellas and battling the cold wind.  The sky is astounding yet ominous.  This is a fabulous early American painting!Condition:  This detailed work measures 42 x 36 and 46 x 40 1/2 in an vintage wood frame (early twentieth century).  The canvas is laid down on board and seems to have been professionally mounted on the board.  There is no in-painting I can see under UV except for a minor brown paint mark or two on the side edges and minor scattered areas bottom right. Also, there is a very minor (almost unnoticeable) scratch center sky that can be easily remedied.  Overall, I would consider this painting to be in excellent condition.  The frame does have a few condition issues in the corners (see photos).  I describe the items offered for sale to the best of my ability, if you need to ask a question please email before bidding.  Sales are final, no returns. The shipping is not free and due to the size of this item shipping should cost between $100 - $150 throughout the continental United States.  To avoid shipping charges, local pick up is available for this item.
