Explanation of terms: Union of Russian Artists: An exhibiting society formed in Moscow in 1903 by members of the 36 artists and the World of Art. The Union arranged annual exhibitions (the first in 1903), which as a ruled opened in Moscow before Christmas and moved to St. Petersburg in February-March of the following year. During the Union’s early years the high quality of the membership ensured the success of the exhibitions, which were geared to providing a showcase and income for the artists rather than promoting any particular vision of art or society. In 1910, however, the Union split when a number of Petersburg members left to reform the Worlds of Art, and thereafter the Union’s fortunes declined as rival groups such as the Jack of Diamonds attracted the best young talent. The Union was briefly revived after the Russian civil war (1918-21) and exhibitions were staged in Moscow (1922, 1923). Some former members of the Union joined Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AkhRR) in the early 1920s some helped from the Association of Realist Artists in 1927. Matthew Cullerne Bown.
