Painted in a typical mottled palette with light impasto capturing light and shadow. The painting is signed lower right Th. Rousseau. Theodore Rousseau was born 1816-1867 the French father of Barbizon known for landscapes. The painting is oil on paper laid on wood board. Rousseau often did this finishing a painting plein aire on paper and then applying it to a wood board when the painting was done to his satisfaction. The paper has tiny pin holes in each corner as he would have had a backing board while painting. The Fontainebleau forest was one of his favorite places to paint. It was inspirational to many of the great Barbizon artists. The painting measures 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 inches with the frame it measures 11 x 14 inches. The frame was added by us. It is a beautiful and well suited Gilt Victorian gesso frame. The panel which the painting is on is lightly bowed by age and the frame has some light expected wear. The painting itself is in excellent untouched condition with one light vertical scratch left foreground, likely just in the varnish. The piece does not come with history but has been reviewed by one of the premiere Maine Auction Houses and was determined to be Very Right. We stand behind the piece as By The Hand of Rousseau.
