Description
An Exceptional Early Ovoid Stoneware Jug. Attributed to Manhattan Potters, Manhattan, N.Y. Incised Concentric Lines, Dynamic Tulips Tied by a Bow. Excellent condition. Circa 1820-1830. Salt Glazes are produced by the vapor method. Salt is introduced into the hot kiln, where it immediately vaporizes. Historically, in early America, it was either dropped into the kiln through holes with moveable covers, called " saltports", or thrown with a shovel into the fireboxes. Salt vaporizes at 800 degrees C, the surface must be in a state of surface melt, this is the vitrification point. There must also be sufficient silica free in this melted surface. Salt glazing stoneware is at a high temperature range, 1200 degrees C. This process was very labor intensive. This stoneware jug has one small firing fissure visible in the last picture. I find no hairlines, no cracks, no chips. Absolutely lovely stoneware. The lip is in excellent condition, visible in the fourth picture. The base is without chips or cracks, hairlines. Beautiful, dynamic tulips and a bow grace the facade of the stoneware. The bow is especially prominent and gracefully executed. Handle excellent, structurally sound. The balance of the jug, when sitting on the shelf, is excellent. No tilting from chips. Very solid and heavy stoneware, smooth surface. It is not signed...Thank you. Dimensions are 13 1/2" in height by 30" in circumference. Shipping in the US will be 19.99 plus required insurance.
