This is a handmade pencil calligraphy plaque that states: "In A.D. 1762, Adino Paddock and John Ballard planted a row of English Elms on Tremont St. in Boston Mass. U.S.A. in front of the Grannary Burying-ground. In 1874 these trees were cut down by order of the city authorities. This set of jewelry was made of wood from these trees and contributed to the Shawmut Universalist Church Fair Dec. 15th, 16th and 17th, 1874. A gift from the patrons of this fair to a worthy officer of the parish. Dec. 1874." Over a century ago, a row of English elms growing along Tremont Street by Old Granary were still shading this historic ground. Earlier, they had shaded the hay market, then the wood market. Later, they cooled people waiting to board the horse cars. Known as the Paddock Elms, they had been imported from England around 1762 by Adino Paddock, a prominent coach builder and capyain of the Artillery. From his nearby shop on the opposite side of Tremont Street, Adino kept a sharp watch over his young saplings. Some say that descendants of those elms are still shading parts of the Old Granary and the Common. Attached in the middle of the plaque are five handmade wooden buttons made from The Paddock Elms. The pencil calligraphy work is enclosed in a wood frame with a glass front. Measures 13 3/4" x 10 1/8".
