Board that painting is on measures 10 by 7 inches.There are thirteen different rows of notching on the frame, with some being layered vertically and some being horizontally cut on same piece of wood, leading to the feeling when looking at it that you ascend to the surface of the painting, rather than the painting sitting inside a frame. This effect is enhanced by the tortoiseshell strips which angle up towards the surface of the painting. Each strip is decorated with a bulbous tortoiseshell decoration. The painting itself is exquisite, with beautiful Mary with Baby Jesus Christ with Joseph. You can see there are two vertical cracks or joints in the wood, and two tiny flakes of paint off near the borders, overall a stunning one of a kind frame and painting. This piece appears to me to be middle European, very possibly German judging from the notch-work. Insurance is required on all purchases over $50.
