Description
AWESOME UNIQUE MIXED MEDIA LEROY NEIMAN ORIGINAL PAINTING   Leroy Neiman is best known for his brilliantly colored, stunning energetic images of sporting events and leisure activities.  He is the most popular living artist in the Unites States if not World Wide.  His art is unique.  It stands by itself with out any real comparison.   This painting being offered is a vibrantly painted original one of a kind oil/gouache football scene. This is the first time this painting has bee offered for sale anywhere.  A uniqueness of this piece is that there are two football scenes painted on one canvas and they are painted twelve years apart.  Each of the two scenes is individually signed by the artist.   Speedy Duncan of the San Diego Chargers is depicted on top half of the canvas.  He is seen standing beside the Charger bench applying stickum to his hands, which was allowed during his playing days.  This portion of the painting is signed and dated 1967 by Neiman.   In 1979 Neiman was commissioned by the NFL to paint a football scene to be used to produce posters that would be handed out to the fans attending the first Annual Vince Lombardi Memorial Football game that took place in 1979. It is very unusual for the NFL to allow posters to be made for a specific NFL game.  For the record, the game was held at the New Jersey Meadowlands and because of NFL regulations; the teams playing were not mentioned on the poster.  The bottom scene of the painting, representing Pittsburg Steelers HOF running back Franco Harris being tackled by a New York Jet defensive player, was used to make the poster.  Neiman signed and dated this piece in 1979.   This unique original work of art was purchased in 1979 in San Francisco at the Bowles Gallery by the present owner just after Neiman painted the NFL poster scene.  At that time Bowles Gallery was the largest distributor of Leroy Neiman Art in the Western United States.    In 1980 the Bowles Gallery had a private cocktail party for Leroy Neiman in which the present owner also attended.  The owner had photos of the painting and had a chance to speak with Leroy Neiman about the uniqueness of piece.  Neiman told the owner he had painted the top half of the first piece in 1967 and had painted another NFL football scene on the bottom half of the painting.  When Neiman was commissioned to paint a piece to be used as a poster for the NFL for the Vince Lombardi game, he decided to paint over the original bottom half football scene.  He then painted the NFL scene of the Jets and Steelers whom participated in the first Vince Lombardi Memorial Game.   There is significant amount of provenance that supports the authenticity of this outstanding painting.  Harry N. Abrams Inc. Publishers New York has produced two publications “Leroy Neiman Posters” and “Winners Leroy Neiman” where this piece is catalogued and discussed.  In the “Leroy Neiman Posters” publication there are two pages that are dedicated completely to this piece.   The winning bidder will receive the two publications and two separate independent authentications of this awesome piece.  Additional provenance will include the documentation of the original purchase of this rare painting from Bowles Gallery.   The piece framed is 20’ X 30” and is in perfect condition.   SportscardsNart has been a full time dealer of sports cards, memorabilia and art for over 20 years.
