Description
A Bit of Venice, by Alfred Stieglitz. This absolutely stunning and rare photograph was taken by Stieglitz in 1894 in Venice. The following is some background I gleaned from the Allen Memorial Art Museum (Oberlin College) web site: "A Bit of Venice was photographed in the early summer of 1894 and published in New York several times later in the same decade. The striking photograph summarizes the results of Stieglitz's nine years of study in Europe and represents the moment when the impact of his crusade on behalf of photography as an art form was first being felt in the United States. The photograph was taken during Stieglitz's four-month European honeymoon in 1894 and his first trip to Venice since 1887. Shortly after his return to New York, Stieglitz created this photogravure from the negative. Clearly satisfied with the result, he published the image four times between 1897 and 1899 in influential photography magazines and books." Important and early Stieglitz hand-pulled photogravure etched and printed by the Gravure Photochrome Engraving Company-Stieglitz's own concern. A friend who owns the Camera Notes version (1897) of this gravure printed one year earlier tells me he believes this example, published in 1898 in The Photographic Times, is actually nicer. Cool blue tones to this image. Image size: 17.9 cm by 12.3cm. Plate marks- 20.7cm by 14.2 cm. Overall sheet size is 11 3/16" by 8 1/16". Condition: everything is flawless: image is perfect. No foxing on plate. (please see photos). Plate comes loosely held in place on acid-free board by acid-free corner mounts and has a protective acid-free paper overmat. I cannot emphasize enough how rare an opportunity this is to acquire this classic Stieglitz image, and at a very reasonable opening reserve. Vintage examples of this image rarely come up for auction outside of the New York City auction houses. This item is guaranteed authentic and original. This is not a reproduction or copy. Great care will be taken in wrapping and shipping this item. Please email with any questions. Checks in US funds or Paypal. Fed Ex ground shipping with tracking, insurance and signature delivery for $15.00. Worldwide Fedex shipping will be billed at cost and added in at auction close.
