The dark red milk paint is the original surface in a wonderful dark color nice and dry with a very dull sheen and nice feel to the wood. It is made of medium stock with no splits to the lid or the base. There is some ripple to the seam lap on the base with small age splits to the wood at the nails and good oxidation around the nails. The center of the lid top is slightly redder in color meaning it had another pantry box stacked on top of it for many years (notice the oxidation and darker surface around the circumference of the lid). Three of the wooden shoe pegs have popped on the base so the base is not stable if you push up from it (just a little loose). The interior is clean. There is a small very old piece missing at the lid lap, and similarly, a piece missing from the base seam lap, and a small piece missing from the base where the shoe peg was once hammered in. As always, I love good wear and patina to the original paint and the dark red paint is great to liven up a stack of boxes. Place a Bid!
