Felix Octavius Carr Darley Biography: Felix Octavius Carr Darley was born in Philadelphia in 1822. After selling some drawings to the Saturday Museum he moved to New York in 1848. In 1850 he was invited by the American Art Union to illustrate Washington Irving's works and his drawings for The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle established his fame. In the years that followed, he did illustrations for additional works by Washington Irving, plus stories, novels, and poems by James Fenimore Cooper, Hawthorne, Longfellow, John Greenlief Whitaker, James Whitcomb Riley, and Charles Dickens, among others. He also designed bank notes and bonds for the U.S. government. He was a charter member of the American Society of Painters in Watercolor and became a member of the National Academy of Design in 1852. After visiting Europe in 1863, he published Sketches Abroad with Pen and Pencil (1868). His drawings of the Civil War attracted praise at the Paris Exhibition of 1867. Shortly before his death he completed a set of illustrations for Shakespeare's plays. Perhaps the most popular American artist of the mid-century, he set a pattern for those who wanted to be artists but did not want to spend their lives seeking commissions for portraits or history paintings. Winslow Homer acknowledged that Darley's success gave him hope that he might also have a career as an artist. Both in his time and in ours, Darley's importance was acknowledged. The New York Public Library, which in 1999 presented an exhibition of his works, said, "His works helped forge our national identity" and The Metropolitan Museum of Art Bulletin called him "the most accomplished and prolific American illustrator before the centennial" (December, 2000, p. 52). In 1867, he was praised in The Book of the Artists, as "the first true illustrator of the American Spirit, a point that the The Philadelphia Inquirer reaffirmed in 1999, noting that Darley "dominated American . . . illustration for nearly a half-century." After being exposed early to the Neo-classical style of John Flaxman, an important English draughtsman, Darley began his career as an illustrator in Philadelphia in 1842. He is considered to be the most influential of the early illustrators who ushered in the Golden Age of Illustration. The Golden Age of American illustration (1870-1965) was a period of unparalleled excellence in book and magazine illustration. It was made possible by advances in technology permitting accurate and inexpensive reproduction of art, combined with an enormous public demand for new graphic art. More significantly, Darley was the first American illustrator to successfully challenge the dominance of English and European schools of illustration over American commercial art; the American illustrators differ from all other artists and illustrators in that they created purely American icons -they were The American Imagists. Darley worked in various styles and mediums throughout his career, at times making quick pencil sketches, other occasions detailed drawings and watercolors. Darley had a tremendously prolific career working both for book publishers (illustrating works by leading writers of the day such as Dickens, Irving, Poe, Hawthorne, Longfellow and Harriet Beecher Stowe) and on magazines, as a regular contributor to Harper's Weekly. This led to his incredible popularity as an American draughtsman. It was through the force of his art, and charisma, that illustration art was established by fine arts communities and academicians as "the most American of American art." American illustration manifested how Americans view themselves, it is both social and cultural history pictured. Sharecroppers' Supper, 1877 is an excellent example of Darley's success in portraying the American sentiment at the close of the nineteenth century. Following a bitterly disputed presidential contest in 1877 between Republican Rutherford B. Hayes and Democrat Samuel Tilden, in which both candidates claim victory, Hayes is declared president. In a back-room political deal, the Republicans agree to abandon Reconstruction policies in exchange for the presidency. Reconstruction policies officially ended and the South then codified and enforced segregation. This watercolor, created in the same year, illustrates the domestic life of a sharecropper family. It depicts a truly American image of life for these families during an important transitional period for the South, and also is created as the Golden Age of illustration begins. ** A REMINDER TO OUR EUROPEAN FRIENDS THAT DUE TO THE EXTRAORDINARY!!
