A talented painter who rarely strayed from the themes and subjects of his Roman birthplace, Pietro Barucci excelled at depicting peasant life on the Roman Campagna.  In this masterpiece Barucci paints a broad picture of the sheperds' life herding longhorn cattle.  The vast open countryside is realisticly portrayed drawing the observer into the painting with it's depth, detail and use of light.  The small country village in the background is dwarfed by the wide open spaces revealed by the artist and the wonderful cloudy sky makes you almost feel the sultry heat of mid day.  A massive piece of artwork which would be a great focal point for any home especially those with a southwestern, California or Italian theme.  Pietro Barucci (1845-1917).  Circa 1900.
