Description
A genuine Elephant Tusk Ivory and Bronze Sculpture, recast in a technique known as chryselephantine (the use of ivory, metal combo), surmounted on a tri color deco marble base. Attributed to the masterful works of the father of the art deco period Demetre H Chiparus. Entitled “Antinea” depicted a scantly dressed maiden standing with both arms raised above her head, hands crossed and supporting a cape that adorns her. Adopted from the Ballet Russes came the most famous dance of all “Scheherazade”. Inscribed D. H. Chiparus About Chiparus: Although born in Romania, Chiparus worked in Paris. He was the chief exponent of chryselephantine, a combination of bronze and ivory, and specialized in depicting exotic women, many inspired by the Ballet Russes. I purchased this beautiful statue from a dealer in New York in Febuary 2003. The Statue was shipped to me from Elliot Stevens Ltd, Waldorf Astoria Hotel. I spoke to a dealer there a couple of months ago to find out what they are selling similiar statues for he said between $10,000 and $12,0000 . I find myself in a place where I need to sell her. Her insured value is $25,000. I was also told circa 1950 to 1970. Not a period piece, but still a wonderful addition to anyone's art collection. She is aprox 26" tall 10" L and 5" deep, she weighs about 53 pounds.
