He traveled widely throughout the Mediterranean; in Syria, Lebanon, Palestine and Egypt. He opened his studio in Beirut in 1867. This view is of the "Patriarche Armenien De Jerusalem," and dates from the later 1800s. It is an albumen print approximately 11" x 8.5" and mounted on museum board with a hinged cover matte. The photo is in excellent condition. A seldom seen close-up portrait by Bonfils. The gentleman pictured is presumably the Orthodox Christian representative of Armenia, as indicated by the title, which appears on the print. As with most of Bonfils' portraits, there is great attention to the costume and ornamentation of the subject who appears in full religious garb. Although the label, which is pictured on the reverse, says 1870s, I believe this particular image is much later. It has great contrast not captured by all my photos due to changing light conditions and my camera. And the tones are rich and the focus sharp.
