DESCRIPTION What a unique piece of art being offered. Astounding bust of "Billionaire" Howard Hughes. This connects Art, History, Las Vegas, and Mystery through the hands of Kermit Hawkins. Known as the designer/ scultptor/builder of the "Sultan" statue that towered above the Dunes Hotel & Casino. Mr. Hawkins was also commissioned by Dean Rusk and others to create busts for them. Rumored that JFK requested one. Why Mr. Hawkins created the bust of Hughes in this light, we are not sure. Mr. Hawkins certainly could have, and most likely, had dealings with Mr. Hughes while working on the Sultan, but that also is unknown. Regardless, the bust is evidence that Kermit had sentiments regarding Mr. Hughes, and expressed it through this one of a kind work of art.  Believed to be created sometime in the 60's (maybe earlier while working on the Sultan), this was given by Kermit, to the present owner as a "gift",  around 1972-73, in Erie, Pa.  Kermit lived in Erie, Pa., and worked at Marx Toys during the 50's, 60's and 70's. Kermit was well known for helping design the G.I. Joe toy figure and building/sculpting the molds, as well as many other of the Marx Toys products. In incredible condition, having a small mark/chip on top of the head, and several small splits (all very solid) in the epoxy as seen in the pictures. Constructed of several materials, the bust section being a fiberglass type of material, but coated with a beautiful resin. Mr. Hawkins was well known for developing a resin to withstand the outdoor elements. The base is made of stone, epoxy, metal, and other material that only Mr. Hawkins would know of (the present owner actually had the formula to some of the materials, but misplaced it over the years). Probably pieces of polished brass embedded into the epoxy, they look like pieces of "gold". Other pieces that look like colored stone, along with the multi-layered material, create an astounding base. Hard, solid and heavy, this weigh's 50 pounds and measures 32" tall. The base is roughly 20" x 14" x 8 1/2" tall. Without question a one of a kind work of art, that has the same mysterious ingredients as the man it was modeled after.
