Description
Ca. 1720 Italian sanguine drawing / Saint John with holy family in a historical setting Two things are important for a drawing, first the quality then the provenance or attribution to an artist. About quality judge for yourself, this is not done by a copyist but as a design for a ceiling painting in a church or palazzo About the provenance: This comes from a good collection. Bottom right you will find a small collection stamp that was also found on a collection of original Rembrandt prints I had some years ago. About the artist or school, difficult for me to give it to a certain artist. This looks like early 18th century's work from a school from Northern Italy, such as Venice or Bologna. The name of Nogari (1699-1763 Venice) or Polanzani (1700-1783) crosses my mind. This is a great opportunity to acquire a quality drawing from one of the most wanted schools from the period. Subject: The subject is more elaborate then one should think at first. In front the focus is on the little Jesus figure on the knee of his mother Marie and caressing the lamb of the little Saint John accompanied by his mother Elisabeth. Joseph is looking over here shoulder together with Anna and another virgin. Standing behind them in an architectural background are the four evangelists of whom Saint John the evangelist is the most recognizable one with the eagle as his attribute. On the wall a painting with King David playing the harp. Analyzing this details, this design is probably intended as an altar piece for a church attributed to Saint John. Technical: Measures 10.00 by 18.00 inches on a slightly larger sheet. The strong 18th century's laid paper has an invisible horizontal middle fold and a small closed tear bottom middle, otherwise in a fine condition. Bottom right a small collection stamp that was also found on a collection of original Rembrandt prints I had some years ago. Reference See my other auctions at EBay auctions Fleming.
