Description
SquareTrade © AP6.0 19" PAINTED WOOD RETABLO SAN ANTONIO DE PADUA By CHARLES CARRILLO ©1991 With traditional homemade gesso, pigments and piñon sap varnish, signed and dated by artist on front and back! According to the artist, this retablo is based on a work of the 18th century New Mexican santero Pedro Fresquis. "San Antonio de Padua was a Portuguese-born Franciscan known for his great ability to preach and perform miracles. He trained under the direction of Saint Francis of Assisi. Usually clad in a blue or gray Franciscan habit and holding the Christ Child and a lily or palm branch. San Antonio is the patron saint of animals, the home and young girls looking for husbands. He is frequently invoked for finding lost objects"-James Cordova For those unfamiliar with Charles Carrillo, here's a brief biography: Dr. Charles M. Carrillo is a scholar, teacher, and lecturer, as well as an artist. He has been a participant at Spanish Market in Santa Fe for many years and has won numerous awards. His work is exhibited in many major museums including The Heard Museum, Denver Art Museum, Regis University, Albuquerque Museum, Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, and the Smithsonian. He is the author of Hispanic New Mexican Pottery (1996) and A Tapestry of Kinship (co-authored with José Antonio Esquibel, 2004); he has also written many articles on New Mexico art and culture. Carrillo earned his doctorate in anthropology from the University of New Mexico and is currently an Adjunct Professor in the University of New Mexico's Religious Studies Program. A book on Carrillo and his art, Charlie Carrillo: Tradition & Soul, was published by LPD Press in 1994. This is a beautiful example of traditional Spanish Colonial New Mexico retablo work. Starting from the wood itself, it appears to be hand hewn as it has irregular thickness and surface textures rather than being a milled piece of lumber. The artist himself states he used homemade gesso, pigments, and the traditional piñon sap varnish. And, it is a wonderful depiction of Saint Anthony of Padua holding the Christ child, in the blue-grey robes of the Franciscan order. Click here to find quality bargains at my eBay store! The retablo measures 19" in length, about 8-5/8" in width, and varies in thickness from 3/8" to ¾". It has an artist-installed leather hanger, a modern wire hanger on the back, and 3 small felt dots on the back bottom for protection. The back has several white areas of gesso/paint. The artist has inscribed and signed on the back of the piece, and also signed on the front bottom of the piece. This item is odor free without any smoke smell. NO RESERVE!
