TITLE: L'Envolée Magique, 1980 MEDIUM: Original Color Lithograph IMAGE SIZE: 37" x 23.2" (94cm x 59cm) SHEET SIZE: 45.6" x 29.7" (116cm x 75.5cm) FRAMED SIZE: 63 ¼" x 47 ¼" (160.6cm x 120cm) SIGNATURE: Hand signed by Marc Chagall (1887-1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. EDITION: Numbered 32/50 in pencil in the lower left margin on Arches wove paper. Out of the series of Fourteen Large Lithographs of 1980 created for editor Aimé Maeght; one of the last works Marc Chagall edited before his death in 1985. CONDITION: Excellent condition with bright colors throughout. DISCUSSION: The beautiful and bright coloration are what grabs our attention immediately as this Magic Flight transports us to the fantastic world of Marc Chagall's creativity, imagination, and innovation. Lush blues, frosty pinks, and bright yellows encompass the entirety of the print, as its grand scale and size makes way for an experience unlike any other work by Chagall. This is an incredibly playful and joyous work, as whimsical characters abound in celebratory dance throughout. Regarding the grand size of the series of prints, Charles Sorlier details the following: It was the editor Aimé Maeght who had the idea of asking Chagall to realize a few large scale lithographs…. At first Chagall was a little reticent. But he wanted to please Aimé Maeght and so he began to work. Almost at once he became completely absorbed in the project and went well beyond the editor's request, since he was soon working on fourteen plates. (42) Created in 1980, Magic Flight is one of fourteen large-scale lithographs created by Chagall from a request by editor Aimé Maeght. Numbered 32/50 in pencil in the lower left margin and hand-signed by Marc Chagall (1887 - 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Published by Editions Maeght, Paris on Arches wove paper. The shimmering tones of the gold moulding complements the cool tones in the work, found in the solid block colors of the paper collage.
