While during his college years at Kent State, he would visit us in the Bookstore.  He began drawing in there on scrap paper, sometimes from the trash can.  Latter he brought notebooks and drew lots in there while visiting.  Seeing his talent, I commissioned him to create a character for advertising my then new store, called Paperback Exchange.  This early Daniel Johnston art is believed to be his first paid for art work.  In this piece of art work, Daniel Johnston depicts the love for comics as well as a sense of humor.  This is signed, D.J., as he was known to us.
