Description
Up for auction, is this Daniel Johnston work of art from 1982, depicting a rare character hero, named Bookman, that was commisioned and drawn for my Bookstore in Calcutta, Ohio. Daniel Johnston attended Jr. High school through high school with my daughters, and was friends. While during his college years at Kent State, he would visit us in the Bookstore. He began drawing in there on scrap paper, sometimes from the trash can. Latter he brought notebooks and drew lots in there while visiting. Seeing his talent, I commissioned him to create a character for advertising my then new store, called Paperback Exchange. Thus Bookman was born! This early Daniel Johnston art is believed to be his first paid for art work. In this orginal work of art on scrap paper, Bookman is enthralled reading "Catcher In The Rye", and proven to be "A Real Man!"
