Studied RAS Sydney and Dattilo Rubbo's School, Westminster School London. He worked in Nigeria 1938-1940 before returning to Sydney, where (c1940s) he lived at Meroola and His drawings and paintings earned him a leading place among the new generation of Sydney Painters. Donald Friend won Two important national prizes 1951 and 1955, which further enhenced his reputation. He travelled extensively in 1960s, settled in Bali in 1967 where he built a house and Studio, send regular exhibitions of his work to Australia. In April 1989, before his dealth, he held a mini-retrospective at Philip Bacon art Gallery Brisbane.
