Description
E N T H U S I A S T We purchase American Artist Estates as well as American art libraries and our goal is to provide, through eBay, a constantly replenished veritable "candystore" of rare and out-of-print books and catalogs for the lover of American prints and paintings... The item you are bidding on is: This GORGEOUS ORIGINAL 2-SIDED [!] Oil on canvas is by noted American Impressionist BERNARD GUTMANN. The finished side is a painting of his daughter Dorothea, who at 7 Years of Age seems to just love playing "Dress-Up"--as you can see! Painted when the artist was residing at Silvermine and serving as the first president thereof, it is signed lower right, and dated 1926, a year before his major one man show at Macbeth Galleries in New York . This is a LARGE oil painting, measuring about 37" x 33" without frame. It is framed in a simple older gold frame, possibly its original frame. The unfinished side is an oil sketch of a Woman with a Black Hat, Seated. It is also quite an appealing image, but obviously unfinished. From a review of the artist's work [a major 1995 monograph exists authored by Percy North with an Introduction by William Gerdts, as well as various exhibition catalogs published through the years], it appears to us that the unfinished side is earlier--probably in the vicinity of 1910-1915. The Monograph: The painting is in excellent condition, but would benefit from reframing. This painting remained in the collection of the artist and his family until circa early 1990s. We acquired this painting from a private party in Southern California and were advised that he had in turn acquired the painting directly from the estate of a Gutmann family member, probably the daughter or children thereof, in the Los Angeles area. If a prospective purchaser desires, the painting may be viewed by appointment in Southern California . If desired, it may also be personally taken delivery of there, in lieu of shipment via carrier. The following, from North's monograph on Gutmann is most applicable to this painting: " When another daughter, Dorothea Hetty, was born eight years later, Gutmann continued to depict images of infancy. Portraits of both Elizabeth and Dorothea formed an integral part of his work; Gutmann was a devoted father and was eager to document his daughter's lives.... The artist's sister-in-law, Bessie Pease Gutmann, became a well-known graphic designer specializing in baby pictures, which sustained the Gutmann and Gutmann publishing firm for many years. Today these sweet, sentimental pictures, referred to as " Gutmann Babies, " continue to attract devotees. Bessie's success with these images of angelic innocence -- along with his own devotion to his offspring -- inspired Gutmann to keep portraying infants. In fact, a number of Gutmann's protraits of his young daughters resemble " Gutmann babies." I am downsizing a large art library--please see my other listings. About this well listed Artist: A founder of the Silvermine Guild, a successful teacher, illustrator, and master of ceramic and graphic art, Bernhard Gutmann received serious critical acclaim during his lifetime, and his work was shown in major exhibitions and museums. But since his death in 1936 his works remained in the family rather than going to the collectors, museums, and galleries that would have introduced him to a general audience. Born in 1869 and educated in Germany, Gutmann arrived in the United Stated at the age of 23. From modest immigrant beginnings--he rose to be the first superintendent of drawing in the Lynchburg public schools. After his marriage to Bertha Goldman, granddaughter of the founder of the investment banking firm Goldman Sachs, he was free to concentrate on his art alone. Described during his "rediscovery" in 1988 as "an American Gauguin, " Gutmann had a great influence on American regional art: he organized the still functioning Lynchburg Art Club in Virginia and later assisted in the foundation of the thriving Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan, Connecticut, of which Solon Borglum and Johnny Gruelle were prominent members. From AskArt.com: Admired by critics during his lifetime, he painted lush, Impressionist figures, still lifes, interiors, and landscapes and also did prints, but after his death his family sequestered his work. In 1938, a retrospective tribute was paid to him by the Vanderbilt Galleries in New York. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, and trained at Dusseldorf and Karlsruhe academies. From 1892 to 1899, he lived in Lynchburg, Virginia, becoming supervisor of public school art. In 1899, he moved to New York where he worked as a magazine illustrator and formed a fine art publishing company. He married financial heiress Bertha Goldman, whom he used as a model. He had a studio in Paris from 1907 to 1911, and he did many French pastoral scenes. The couple then lived briefly in New York, built a home in Silvermine, Connecticut, traveled in Europe, and in 1934 he became regional director for The Public Works of Art Project [ WPA ].
