The wood is hand carved with alternating diagonal lines that are then built up into a herringbone pattern. The design is very architectural and extremely well thought out. Since there is no signature, I believe it was created by a professional woodworker for a daughter somewhere in the 19th c.  The size is 10 1/4 " square and a height of 6" The condition is extremely nice, no issues except one inch long rub/scratch on the top and lots of soft mellow well loved wear. There does seem to be a place for an internal lid on one of the compartments but it has been lost. The patina is GREAT! The interior is covered in Victorian era lithograph cutouts with images of flowers and birds. The top has copper enameled tile with scattered Millefiori on a gold dust ground. The hinges are solid brass and the lid stays open when opened. All the corner are still there, well rounded but still intact! Truly an amazing box with many hours of time devoted to it's creation and in remarkable condition with no issues. I believe this is a unique and excellent piece.
