Description
ORIGINAL DOUBLE-SIDED INK ON CARDBOARD DRAWING BY CHICAGO OUTSIDER ARTIST EMILY "LEE" GODIE (1908 - 1994) Untitled ("Hello Everybody"), ca. 1989 Purchased in Chicago directly from the artist in early 1989. Ink on Cardboard Approx. 30" x 24" The drawings depict Godie's self-styled portrait imagery on both sides with her signatures placed three times on the two sides in varying configurations - "Lee" and "Lee Godie" on one side, "Emily Godie" on the opposing side. The images also portray several recognizable elements including two birds bearing signs which read, "Love;" and, text calling out to viewers, "Hello Everybody." Lee Godie was well known to Chicago natives as a bag lady who sold her drawings on the steps of Chicago's infamous Art Institute. Despite a following of collectors, she lived on the street until 1990. She has been the subject of numerous museum and gallery exhibitions, including her solo review - "Artist Lee Godie: A Twenty-Year Retrospective", curated at the Chicago Cultural Center from March 1993 to January 1994. In addition to numerous private and public collections, her work can be seen in the Smithsonian Institution. The art work is in very good condition. A small and subtle food stain appears in the empty space on one side, and has been present since the time of purchase from the artist, testifying to the street-based lifestyle she was living at the time the drawings were executed.
