Description
hollow_cut Store EXCEPTIONAL 19th CENT FULL-LENGTH MILITARY SILHOUETTE Description: Superb 19th century antique silhouette portrait of an unidentified military officer shown in full-length view facing right and extending his sword with his left hand. The silhouette is cut and pasted to paper/card with a monochromatic watercolor wash background at the bottom (part of which appears to depict the silhouette’s “shadow”). Expertly cut and heavily embellished with both bronzing to hair, sword/scabbard, uniform, gloves, braided epaulettes, buttons & belt and a gray-blue coloring of his uniform collar and cuffs. The detailing is some of the finest I’ve seen and unfortunately the photographs do not show all the detail. The contrast between the gilding or bronzing and color details is stunning. In excellent condition with slight toning to the background and a few minor errant traces of glue around the silhouette, the viewing area measures ~10½” x 6¼”. Framed in its period, probably original, birds eye maple veneer frame with gilt inner liner with a total size of ~13” x 9”. An exceptionally fine early silhouette of a rare military subject with very nice provenance. The wooden backboard retains an old collection label from Wright Howes (of Chicago and Augusta GA). Wright Howes was a noted antiquarian book dealer of Americana who died in 1978 at the age of 95. I found a wealth of biographical information on the following website from a paper given to The Chicago Literary Club: http://www.chilit.org/Papers%20by%20author/Blew%20--%20Howes.HTM. Mr. Howes completed a well-known reference in 1954 entitled U.S.iana (1650-1950); a Selective Bibliography in Which Are Described 11,620 Uncommon and Significant Books Relating to the Continental Portion of the United States.Terms: Insured domestic shipping will be $15.00.
