Click below to zoom Dimensions Height Width Depth Diam Weight 14 3/4" 16"       Edmund Thomas 1857 SYDNEY Lithograph ALLAN & WIGLEY This auction is for a hand colored Lithograph showing Sydney Harbor in Australia in 1857. It was created by the English born artist Edmund Thomas (1827-1867) who arrived in Australia in 1852. The Lithograph is a variant of a print produced for "The Australian Album", a book of music scores published in 1857 by J.R. Clarke. A version of this print accompanied the sheet music for "The Pic Nic Polka". We believe this Lithograph was produced as an adjunct to the album and was sold separately. It is hand colored, unlike the picture that was bound with the sheet music. It has the Edmund Thomas signature at the bottom left corner of the picture, and is marked Allan & Wigley Lith Printers at the bottom right corner. An image of the print and information about "The Pic Nic Polka" can be found in Roger Butler's National Gallery of Australia (NGA) publication "Printed: Images in Colonial Australia 1801-1901" on pages 156 and 157. On the paper on the back of the frame is a handwritten note in ink "SYDNEY 1857". There is also a stamped name and address with old style phone numbers (with named telephone exchanges instead of the first 2 digits of the number) so we conclude it was framed many years ago. The frame is 16 inches wide and 14 3/4 inches high. The Lithograph image is 9 inches wide and 7 inches high. The frame is Black with Gold trim next to the glass, and Green and White trim at the outside edge. The paper on the back of the frame has a small water spot at the top edge, but is otherwise in excellent condition. The frame is in excellent condition with no defects noted. The Lithograph may have a couple of small foxing spots (we're not certain), but is in very good condition. See the pictures above (but note that there is some glare reflected in the glass). Overall condition of this item is very good.
