Description
This is a hard edge style drawing of a still life of poppies by Eva Slater. Eva Slater was one of the core members of a group of hard edge artists working in Los Angeles in the 50's and 60's. All these artists have become very well known internationally and include names such as Frederick Hammersly, John McLaughlin, Lorser Feitelson and Helen Lundeburg. Because Eva dropped out of the scene in the late 70's she was for all purposes forgotten by the art world, however, the work is so good there is no doubt its rediscovery is imminent. Recently she has been included in some comprehensive exhibitions featuing Los Angeles artists of the sixties. Her drawing technique is superb (see detail photo) and her colors subtle and beautiful. The drawing is 11 x 9", it is signed but not dated and is in excellent condition. Eva had a lot to add to the hard edge movement at the time and was highly respected, winning a number of awards including the New Talent Award for Art in America Magazine.
