He died on April 1992 in Madrid, Spain (82 years old).Bacon was an entirely self taught painter and it was an exhibition of works by Pablo Picasso that inspired him to make his first drawings and paintings.By the 1950s, Bacon had developed his distinctive style as a figure painter, depicting human beings screaming in physical and psychic pain in a series of stark bedrooms, bathrooms and cages. The style of his work was expressionistic and depicted distorted human forms that stood as images of corrupt and debased humanity. In 1974, Bacon met John Edwards, a young Eastender with whom he formed an enduring, paternal relationship. Bacon died on April 28, 1992 in Madrid and bequeathed his entire estate to Edwards after his death. Edwards, in turn, donated the contents of Francis Bacon's chaotic studio at 7 Recce Mews, South Kensington, to the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin, where the studio was carefully reconstructed as Bacon had left it.Francis Bacon is one of the most important artists of the art history of the post war period. Its paintings are part of the collections of the most important museums of the world, and the prices broke records at auctions and keep on increasing every year.In May 16, 2007 at Sothebys, New York, a Francis Bacon painting smashed the auction record for postwar art fetching $52.7 million. For the coming auctions (May 2008) at Sothebys, a triptych painting  of Francis Bacon's may fetch $70 Million in N.Y.
