Description
Offered is an historic photo by one of the most famous, and accomplished photographs working for the Farm Security Administration during the Depression, BEN SHAHN. This FSA photograph is of an old paddle wheel boat on the Mississippi at Memphis, Tennessee. The reverse of the photograph is inscribed in pencil, " The G. B. Smith, an old River boat docked at Memphis Tennessee."  Stamped in violite ink on the reverse is, "Kindly use the following credit line: RESETTLEMENT ADMINISTRATION PHOTOGRAPH BY Shahn"   In black ink: "Please Credit F>S>A> Fam Securty Administration Photo By SHAHN. iN PENCIS IS WRITTEN "rA 6083 m; AND IN RED PENCIS (IN THE UPPER RIGHT-HAND CORNER) "6083 m" . Ben Shahn was born in Kovno (Kaunas), Russian Empire, to Joshua Hessel and Gittel (Lieberman) Shahn. His father was exiled to Siberia for alleged revolutionary activities in 1902, at which point Shahn, his mother, and his three younger siblings moved to Vilkomir (Ukmergė). In 1906, the family emigrated to America where they rejoined Hessel, who had fled Siberia. They settled in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, New York. Shahn began his path to becoming an artist in New York, where he was first trained as a lithographer. Shahn's early experiences with lithography and graphic design is apparent in his later prints and paintings which often include the combination of text and image. Shahn's primary medium was egg tempera, popular among Social Realists. In 1935, Shahn was recommended by Walker Evans, a friend and former roommate, to Roy Stryker to join the photographic group at the Farm Security Administration (FSA). As a member of the FSA group, Shahn traveled and documented the American south alongside Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange and other photographers. Like his earlier photography of New York City, Shahn’s FSA work can be viewed as social-documentary.[2] Here is an opportunity to own an original print by one of the most respected and famous of the Farm Security Administration photographers, Ben Shahn. On Jun-30-08 at 15:52:42 PDT, seller added the following information:Sorry for the typos in the second paragraph above. The lines should read: "Please Credit F.S.A. Farm Security Administration Photo by SHAHN." In pencil is written, "ra 6083." And in red pencil, (in the upper right-hand corner) "6083 m".
