Madonna del Sasso, Locarno, Switzerland You are bidding on a rare original antique signed etching by English Master etcher and listed artist Alfred Hugh Fisher (London, 1867 - 1945) . The art is pencil signed by the artist on the lower right " A Hugh Fisher" and on the lower left he titled the piece in pencil " Madonna del Sasso, Locarno " Fantastic opportunity to obtain this original art for a fraction of the cost from an art gallery . Etching is a captivating scene of Madoona del Sasso At the northern tip of Lake Maggiore in the canton of Ticino, situated on the delta of the River Maggia, is Locarno, the city with the mildest climate in Switzerland, enjoying 2300 hours of sunshine every year. Towering over Locarno is the famous pilgrimage church of Madonna del Sasso. The founding of this holy place dates back to a vision of the Virgin Mary which appeared to a Franciscan monk , Bartolomeo d'Ivrea during the night of 15 August 1480 (Feast of the Assumption). From the rocky spur of Orselina there is a fantastic view of the city and the lake with the mountains in the background. Alfred Hugh Fisher was An English etcher, engraver, illustrator and painter. He was educated at the University College Schools, Lambeth School and South Kensington, and then concluded his formal studies in Paris, under Laurens and Constant. Concentrating mostly upon original printmaking and illustration, Fisher was appointed as an artist to the Visual Instruction Committee of the Colonial Office, which gave him the chance to travel extensively throughout the British Empire and throughout the World . Etchings and drypoints of Switzerland , New Zealand, India, Burma, Hungary, France and England were published in London by in signed editions of usually between forty to one hundred impressions. This is a rare chance to own one of these rare etchings. His fine etchings were exhibited at the Royal Academy, the R.B.A. and with the Royal Engravers. Fisher was elected an Associate of the Royal Engravers and was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers and the California Print Makers. He lived and worked for lengthy periods of time in both Amberly, Sussex, and Risborough. Fisher was also active as an author and published several volumes of poetry. He both illustrated and wrote The Cathedral Church of Hereford (1898), The Marriage of Ilario (1919) and Through India and Burmah with Pen and Brush (1911). Major public galleries such as the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, include examples of his original prints in their collections. The art is protected under glass with a nice Gold finish wood frame . The etching is in excellent condition with a clear image as shown and the matting has some yellowing and discoloration to be expected for its age. Frame measures approximtely 16 x 13 3/4 . Enjoy!
