Description
Auction description Charles-Emile Wattier (1800-1868): Young Woman with her Lute, Antique Frame, Provenance A wonderful 19th century drawing with colored pencil highlights, of a pretty young woman in 18th century dress, playing a fancifully shaped lute, and housed in a beautiful antique, gilded frame. The old frame is in and of itself a desirable antique, and together with the drawing you have a lovely object, ready to hang and enjoy. The artist (signature lower left) is Charles-Emile Wattier (1800-1868), listed with an article in the authoritative Bénézit Dictionnaire. Wattier exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1831 to 1868 and was well known for his works in the manner of the 18th century master François Boucher. Provenance: This fine work has a very good provenance. Lower left you can see the cachet of the noted English collector William Bateson (listing 2604a in the Lugt catalog of collector's marks). This drawing was sold April 23-24, 1929, at the Sotheby's (London) sale of the Bateson collection. This same drawing (I believe, but could not verify this old record with an auction photo) sold again on June 26, 1998 at Christie's (London), for 1,500 pounds or about $2,500 dollars of that time. It next sold in Paris on March 21, 2001, for 4,500 francs or about $615, more like $750 with buyer's fee included. I acquired it in France a couple of years ago and it has been hanging on my wall since then, as part of my personal collection. It's very sweet and easy to live with! Dimensions are about 8 inches square (picture), and 13 inches square(frame). I see a little foxing on the paper surface but condition overall is quite good. An excellent and desirable find for the quality of the work, and a good art investment as well. Shipping will be $15 within the U.S. Enjoy the bidding!
