Frederick Hart 1943-1999 Ex Nihilo - Figure 1 This piece is numbered IV - IV AP This bronze edition was authorized by the Washington National Cathedral. The sculpture measures about H: 72" x W: 64" x D: 20" (302) Hart won an international competition and earned the right to produce a series of "Creation" sculptures for the Washington National Cathedral. Hart was commissioned to create the massive sculpture series for the Cathedral's main facade. The Cathedral was the place where Hart first learned the fundamentals of Italian stone carving. "Ex Nihilo" (Out of Nothing) was the product of two and a half years of imagination and 13 years of laborious sculpting efforts. Unveiled in 1982, this unfolding, intertwining swirl of human and divine forces is arguably the most important work of religious sculpture in the 20th century. Frederick Hart is widely regarded as the finest figurative sculptor of the twentieth century. His works “ Ex Nihilo" at Washington National Cathedral and " Three Soldiers " at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial are some of the most visited and celebrated achievements in twentieth century sculpture.    Frederick Hart will be a pinnacle part of art history and will be  revered  and remembered as one of the greatest American sculptors ever lived.
