Description
Rare Authentic French Renaissance Tapestry (Colombian Collector) This rare authentic French tapestry from the works of Francois Boucher is LARGE at 5’ 4” x 3’. Frame appears to be gold leaf. This tapestry came from a Colombian “Gentleman’s” private collection in Colombia. French tapestries in the eighteenth century were elegant and romantic. Such is the case of Francois Boucher, designer for Beauvais since 1736. The painter François Boucher (1703-70) painted many designs depicting love scenes in pastoral settings which were worked as tapestries at Beauvais. His style was used for many tapestries produced during this period throughout Europe. During 30 years, he designed six tapestry sets of 4-9 pieces each. At least 400 tapestries were woven after his cartons, splendid masterpieces of the Rococo style. Craftsmen worked in groups on one painting at a time and wove their art form into the rich and colorful scenes shown in this gallery. We know that these tapestries are rare because by the end of the eighteenth century (1790’s), wallpaper replaced wall coverings of wool and silk. Worth 3X more than price listed.Buyer is responsible for pick up, shipping, packing and insurance
