Description
Full Plate Daguerreotype I am pleased to offer another of my Daguerreotypes on eBay. Although I have been a daguerreotypist for a number of years and my work is included in many private collections, I usually only offer my work through private sales. My current offering is a whole plate (6.5 x 8.5 inches) of the Waterfall Glen falls on Sawmill creek coming to life after a late winter freeze. This Daguerreotype shows water from freshly melted snow, which has swollen the banks of the creek, spilling over an ice encrusted precipice. The huge crystalline deposits of ice flanking the water spillway sparkle brilliantly in the early morning sun, while in contrast, the rapidly flowing water sends up a diaphanous mist as it rushes over the ice capped rocks onto the still frozen creek below. Despite the brilliance of this image there is only a slight hint of solarization. The Daguerreotype will be mounted in the beautiful, tarnished silver, solid wooden frame pictured below. The overall framed size is 17.25 x 15.25 inches. This is a contemporary Daguerreotype, which I made on the first day of March in 2008. It was photographed in-camera, mercury-developed and gold toned (gilded) before being archivally sealed behind glass with filmoplast P90. It is signed and titled on the back with an engraving tool. Because it is a direct in-camera positive, it is a unique image. A scan of the Daguerreotype before framing. My name is John Hurlock. I have been a photographer for over 50 years. I made my first daguerreotypes in the late fifties, using handmade equipment copied from antique pieces loaned to me by Beaumont Newhall. Indeed, one of these early plates sent to Mr. Newhall is in the collection of the George Eastman house in Rochester, NY. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of daguerreotypes, but these first plates were not of a satisfactory quality. Ten years ago I decided to focus on the Daguerreotype as my primary means of artistic expression. Thanks to my scientific training and background as a chemical engineer, I was able to to master this demanding and unpredictable process. I have rediscovered old techniques, and establish new ones which are documented in my multiple articles in various Annuals and newsletters published by the Daguerreian Society. In particular I am proud of the results I achieve with my cold-mercury process. Many collectors have commented that my plates have a unique quality of tones. In this age of digital photography, I have found great satisfaction in the creation of one of a kind images using the Daguerreotype process.
