The large size ( canvas size: 40 inches by 30 inches ) and bold rich color enhance this sweeping lush sunset vista: circa 1890: incredibly, the oil is unsigned: There are two old faint pencil inscriptions at the top of the upper stretcher bar/verso - " cat. 321 - A " and to the right - " Ex. M.I. ". ( unframed ). On quality, the work is certainly by one of the American Luminist masters. It has been suggested that the initials M.I. could refer to The Mechanics Institute in San Francisco where major artists exhibited at the turn of the century and before. ( Fine 19th century American Tropical paintings are rare. ).
