Description
GREGORY PERILLO - OIL ON CANVAS THE STRANGER   This original oil painting on canvas by Gregory Perillo is in perfect condition. The art measures 20" x 24" & is stretched on a wood frame. It is framed in a dark wood picture frame. The Stranger painting is artist signed in the lower left corner with "Perillo". "The Stranger" is written on the back.  The portrait features a cowboy riding his horse through a western town. In the bottom right corner is a coyote appearing to have been startled by the horse. The detail on this oil is absolutely fantastic.   My husband & I purchased this framed oil painting about 20 years ago at an art gallery in Colorado, near Steam Boat Springs & the Great Divide. It is guaranteed to be a completely authentic oil on canvas, handpainted by Gregory Perillo. This beautiful piece of art is an original, unpublished oil - meaning it has never been copied to print or to a lithograph. It has never been touched up or restored. It has always been in a non-smoking home.   Gregory Perillo was born in 1929 in New York & grew up on Staten Island. Perillo was the 2nd child of Italian immigrants. As a boy, Perillo's father took classes to become an educated American citizen. His Father took young Gregory to museums & told him stories from his American history classes of the American West. He began studying art at the age of 10. At the age of 17, Perillo joined the Navy. Serving for two years on the U.S.S. Storm King, he was assigned as a cartoonist.  He first spent time with Indian people during one of his Navy leaves, when he went home with a Navy buddy to a ranch in Montana.    After he was out of the Navy & back in New York, he married Mary Venitti. Perillo worked in a garment factory, earned his high-school degree & began attending evening art classes. Perillo studied at The School of Visual Arts, the Art Students League & Pratt Institute. In 1950, the couple headed West. While in Sedona, Perillo met William Robinson Leigh whose work Perillo had seen at the Grand Central Galleries in New York. Leigh had a studio in New York, and Perillo began visiting him there. Perillo spent the next 5 years studying with him, until Leigh's death in 1955.   Perillo started his art work with American Indians because of his father's vivid & intriguing tales. Over the years, Gregory Perillo has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. observing their customs, living among & painting the portraits of Native Americans. His main admiration & focus was the Sioux, Cheyenne, Apache & Blackfoot tribes. He would live for 3 or 4 months at a time on American Indian reservations to sketch & make friends with the residents. His art work usually portrays people he met on the reservations.   Gregory Perillo can be labeled as a contemporary western painter & sculptor, who through his landscapes & portraits captures the fascinating heritage of Native Americans & Western wildlife. He was one of the first western artists to combine portraits of humans with animals on canvas. Perillo uses a distinct style combining realism & impressionism to portray the American West with wildlife. His treasured work, having won numerous awards, is displayed in several American museums & private collections.   From the information I can gather about Gregory Perillo, he & his bride of more than 50 years, Mrs. Perillo, are currently living in New York & doing charity work. Quoted from an "Official National Order of the Arrow" web site, "Today, Mr. Perillo devotes his talents and time to many charitable endeavors, such as the creation of gifts for the Parkinson's Foundation, the Archdiocese of New York, the City of New York, the Staten Island Fire Department, and the Boy Scouts of America."   May God continue to bless Mr. & Mrs. Perillo as they have blessed so many others. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~   If you have any questions concerning this painting or would like more pictures, please email me.
