The History I Know: GEORGE WASHINGTON PAINTING __________________________________________________ This important painting of the bust of George Washington is a finely painted depiction of America’s First President. The painting measures 2 feet 6 ¼ inches by 2 feet 2 ¾ inches. The canvas is in good condition with one small stain on the backside, this is the only visible defect to the back of the canvas. It is only a slight surface stain and there is no structural damage to the canvas or the painting. The frame is ornate gold leaf, in nice condition. The artist responsible for the piece has been the subject of much speculation ranging from Gilbert Stuart to Peale and everyone in between. Mr. and Mrs. Williams first acquired the painting of George Washington from a relative of the painter Edward Hicks in the mid 1940’s. (Years Later Mrs. Williams Brokered 1 Of The Peaceable Kingdoms Owned By The Same Relative.) In the late 1960’s the Williams loaned the painting to the Phoenix Art Museum, Arizona, USA, for 10 years. ( 1969-1979 ) In 1979 the Williams sold the painting to a collector who is still the current owner of the painting to this day.
