As a draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor, but principally as a painter, Matisse is one of the best-known artists of the twentieth century. Although he was initially labeled as a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s, he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of color and drawing is apparent, in a body of work spanning over a half-century, and won him recognition as a leading figure in Modern Art. Matisse 50 This masterpiece ‘Fleurs Dans Le Vase Bleu’ conveys Matisse’s tranquil approach to still life composition and particular enjoyment of the painting process during this period and the latter years of his life. It portrays a remarkable scene of undisturbed serenity and peaceful imagery that Matisse is notorious for; particularly as seen in his still life works of art. The painting is divided into two sections – the subject and the background.  The background surroundings depicts amazing use of gorgeous yellows, light reds and greens, with the viewer being drawn into the mix of these colors as they form around the subject matter.  The midpoint of the piece displays fantastic use of explosive colors; The flowers having amazing attention to detail whilst the brush strokes show character and grace. Clearly this painting is depicting the graciousness and serenity that had occurred up to this point of his life. It is clearly evident that this work was painted during the same period as Matisse had experimented with large gouache cutouts and the ‘Verve’ period.   For publications on this period see ‘Matisse, Henri. Verve. The Last Works of Henri Matisse 1950-1954, London and Paris: distributed in Great Britain by Zwemmer, 1958.
