Description
Henry Kallem two drawing on paper measuring approx. 11x14 inches each in watercolor and both signed and dated Henry Kallem 59 Henry Kallem studied under his father, Morris J. Kallem, "a portraitist of international reputation." Kallem's formal instruction began in Philadelphiaµs Graphic Sketch Club and continued at the National Academy of Design in New York City. Kallem worked as an artist for the WPA from 1934 to 1939. In 1946 he continued his education at the Hans Hoffman School. Shortly afterward, Mr. Kallem achieved national recognition by winning first prize ($2,500) in the Pepsi-Cola competition. The award for his piece, "Country Tenement," inspired the article "Freak Painting Prizes" (June 28, 1948 Life) and national "controversy over awards being given to what some critics considered unintelligible modern art." Art Digest commented in a 1948 article that the work was "trivial." Kallem's art has been exhibited in many locations including the annual exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia (1936), the New York World's Fair in 1939, the ACA Gallery in 1939, the National Academy of Design, the International Watercolor Show in the Brooklyn Museum, the Hallmark Exhibition of 1950, and finally, the Casein Society in 1950. He has also presented a number of one-man shows in New York City. These solo exhibitions began with a 1948 Pepsi sponsored show at the Opportunity Gallery and continued with others at the Harry Salpeter gallery, the East Hampton Gallery, and the Jack Tanzer Galley. Public collections of Kallem's work include: The Corcoran Gallery of Art; the Newark Museum, NJ; the Chrysler Museum; Colby College; the Matatuck Museum; the University of Massachusetts; and Lehigh University. Kallem taught his students in "the fundamentals of drawing, painting and composition" at private school New York. Later, he taught in other locations such as Roslyn, NY, and the New York City YWCA. Mr. Kallem first went to Monhegan Island shortly after World War II. He utilized the island for both artistic inspiration as well as recreational release. Kallem's semiabstract works were often oil on canvas or acrylic on paper, although occasionally he worked with wood block prints. Kallem tended to paint in series, where each of the subjects varied, but the style of all the pieces remained constant. In fact, Kallem's eleventh one-man show carried the title of "Variations on Theme". Besides the Pepsi-Cola prize in 1947, Kallem earned three other awards. These included the third place entries in Hallmark's 1954 and 1956 exhibitions and honorable mention at the Casein Society Annual Exhibition, 1959.
