Description
Welcome to Broctique Vintage French Antiques Our French 'Brocante' where you will find vintage linens, curiosities & unusual accessories for your home from France. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What a wonderful thing this carving is. We found this magnificent hand carved STATUE OF LIBERTY at a Brocante Fair in the Deux-Sevres region of France about 2 months ago. This carving is signed and dated. The maker, one Joseph Mace', has inscribed his name on the bottom of the base and as well has carved "Fait a Com??? Fevrier 1944" We have not been able to decipher all the letters of the place where this wonderful object was made because the maker has carved them in a fancy script (see photos). The carving has been made in two pieces---the base and 'Liberte' herself. Both are carved from pieces of heavy, dense wood but we are not certain of the type-- very probably oak. The two pieces together weigh 2.9 kilos or approx. 6 1/2 pounds. The two pieces together measure 25 inches (63 1/2 cms) high and the bottom of the base measures 6 inches (15 1/2 cms) square. We made an effort to research the name, Joseph Mace', on the Internet and did discover that there was a prisoner of war with that name during WW2 at a German Prisoner-of-war camp , (Stalag 17B), in Austria near a town called Krems. We have no way of knowing if this is the same man, but simply add the result of our research as a possible clue about the maker of this piece. We have added the maximum 12 photos allowed by eBay and hope they speak for the charm and may I say poignancy of this piece. In 1944, surely "Liberty" was a thing more prized in France and around the world than most anything else. As you certainly know, the Statue of Liberty that stands in New York harbour as a beacon to the world was a gift from the citizens of France to the citizens of the USA. Surely that statue is one of America's most prized 'possessions.' If you require further photos, please contact us and we will be happy to supply them to your email.
