Fox, Fowler, and Company was a British private bank, based in Wellington, Somerset. The company was founded in 1787 as a supplementary business to the main activities of the Fox family: shepherding and wool-making. Cleve manor was built by the Fox brothers as a gentleman's country manor. Pair are 14" X 10" unframed, significant foxing (yellow stain) on man, minor foxing on woman. Charcoal or pastel. Robert Goodloe Harper Pennington moved among the most influential American artists of the late nineteenth century. Pennington was a prolific and talented painter of portraits of New York society men and women, as well as of children. He was commissioned to paint the portrait of the King of England.
