Description
DESCRIPTION This is a great example of the surreal fantasies created by listed Berkeley, CA, artist Helen Wood (1905-1994). Wood lived her entire life in Berkeley, studying art at the California College of Arts and Crafts in neighboring Oakland. She originally pursued a more conventional career in landscape painting. But, in the later decades of her life, she executed these fantastic images. They are great examples of the whimsical approaches that characterized so much Bay Area art in the wake of the "Summer of Love" and the Psychedelic era (even among the older folks!). But Helen's visions are unique. This example is on heavy watercolor paper, 12.25 x 19 inches. It is executed in watercolor and more opaque gouache. It is signed by the artist in pencil at lower right, although I could not get a good picture of the signature against the brown background. It features an extraordinary jumble of figures and humorous faces. The work is in excellent condition. It has been taken out of its old frame, but I preserved the label on the back that gives the title "potpourri" and indicates that the piece was shown at the Richmond Art Center in 1981. The Richmond Art Center is a well-respected professional venue that continues to exhibit artists from the East Bay region. CA residents will be charged 8.75% sales tax.
