Description
Auction description Henri Epstein (1892-1944): An Allegory of Youth, Major Modernist Artist I am happy to offer this wonderfully evocative study by a major 20th century artist, Henri Epstein, born in Poland in 1892 but French by adoption, an associate of Modigliani and Soutkine. Epstein, who like Modigliani was Jewish, died in Germany in 1944, a victim of the Holocaust. In this drawing , done in red crayon on a sheet of lined paper from a copy book, we see a young man in light summer dress gazing outward towards an unseen horizon, as behind him two young women do a joyful dance, seemingly inspired by an image from an ancient Greek vase. This picture can be viewed as a lighthearted beach scene, and on another, deeper, level as an allegory of youth and life. In this allegorical reading (the one I am drawn to) the poignancy is indeed great, as this enormously gifted artist perished at Auschwitz... Dimensions of the sheet are about 6.9 inches by 8.5 inches. The paper has yellowed slightly; condition is otherwise very good. The posthumous atelier stamp has been applied lower left; it is a guarantee of authenticity, to which I add my own. This is emotionally powerful work by an important modernist talent. You and I can't afford a Picasso or a Modigliani, but for the time being we can still afford an Epstein. Paintings by Henri Epstein currently sell at auction in the $3,000 - $8,000 range. There is NO RESERVE on this picture and I am starting it off at a most reasonable price. Shipping and insurance will be $8 within the U.S. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
